Northern Lights Coming

WESTERN WASHINGTON - This spring could be your best chance yet to seen the northern lights. Scientists say this year is the peak of the eleven-year solar cycle that causes northern lights. Astronomers in the Northwest expect they'll be able to see the ribbons of color in the night sky come the spring.

University of Washington researcher John Sahr expects people in the Seattle- Tacoma area will see the aurora borealis. The solar storms also carry the risk of electrical disruptions that can disable satellites and knock our power lines. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration tracks current auroral conditions on its web site. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration posts daily views of the sun that show sunspots and flares.
