Pitch a tent on Antarctica's shoresAntarctica
While from the outset it resembles nothing more than a remote expanse of white solitude, but Antarctica is so much more than snow and ice. Here, nature's command is absolute; the local wildlife – penguins, birds, sea lions and even whales – have a healthy curiosity when it comes to encountering us humans, and the arid landscape is more pristine than one can imagine.
It's a bucket list adventure, and experiencing it while kipping in a tent, with little more than its thin walls separating you from the elements, on a one of Bentours' Antarctica voyages is the pièce de résistance.
Your camping excursion begins with a pre-camp briefing onboard your Hurtigruten vessel. Once this is completed, you'll disembark with experienced expedition leaders who will accompany you for the night.
Travellers participate in the expedition from beginning to end – this means if you've never pitched a tent before, this is your chance to learn. After all, how many people can say they learned to pitch a tent in Antarctica? Once you've set up camp, wrap up in another warm layer and kick back in the opening of your tent, marvelling at the complete and utter stillness of your surrounds. Weather permitting, you'll also have the opportunity to make the short walk to nearby viewpoints and visit penguin colonies in the bright Antarctic night. When the time comes to lay your head down, you'll be lulled to sleep by the gentle penguin chatter nearby. Top off the experience by rising early the next morning and enjoy a steaming brew while watching the sun rise over the magnificent part of the world.
