Finlands giving away free holidaysFinland
Finland has just been crowned the happiest country on Earth for the ninth year in a row, which is either deeply inspiring or mildly annoying depending on how many unread emails you have right now. But instead of gatekeeping their joy, the Finns are doing something unexpected, they’re inviting the rest of us to come over and figure it out.
The catch? You’ll need to put your phone down. Horrifying, we know.
According to the latest World Happiness Report, all that scrolling, swiping and ‘just one more reel’ behaviour isn’t doing our brains any favours. Finland’s solution is refreshingly low-tech: step outside, slow down, and maybe sit quietly by a lake until you remember what peace feels like. Revolutionary stuff.
To celebrate their ninth win, Visit Finland has launched the Chill Like a Finn challenge; a free seven-day summer escape to Finnish Lakeland for a handful of lucky, slightly burnt-out humans. And no, this isn’t one of those jam-packed, ‘see everything in 48 hours’ trips. The itinerary is basically anti-itinerary.
Think lakeside cottages, morning swims in water so clear it feels fake, long forest walks, and sauna sessions that make you question every life choice that didn’t involve moving here sooner. Meals are simple, company is good, and your phone? Ideally forgotten in a drawer somewhere.
It sounds almost too easy, which is probably the point. While the rest of the world is busy chasing happiness like it’s a limited-time offer, Finland is over here gently suggesting we just… stop. Breathe. Sit down. Maybe have a snack.
Turns out, happiness might not be something you find. It might just be something you stop interrupting.
Applications for the Chill Like a Finn challenge are now open. People around the world are invited to apply and explain why they could benefit from a proper summer reset.
Selected participants will travel to Finland this summer with a plus one to spend seven days learning how to truly chill like a Finn in the Finnish Lakeland, experiencing everyday rituals often linked to Finnish wellbeing, from sauna culture to long, quiet days by the water. The application period runs until 29 March 2026, after which the chosen participants will be announced.
More information about the challenge and the application process can be found on Visit Finland’s campaign website.
