Air New Zealand launches Economy Skynest
Long-haul flights aren’t getting any shorter, but they’re about to get a lot more bearable.
Air New Zealand has announced that its much-hyped Economy Skynest™ will go on sale from May 18, 2026, marking a pretty significant shift in how we think about flying long distances.
Set to launch on select Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft from November, the concept is simple: lie-flat sleep, without the business class price tag. Initially rolling out on flights between Auckland and New York (one of the longest routes in the world), Skynest gives Economy and Premium Economy passengers the option to book a proper rest mid-flight.
The setup includes six bunk-style pods tucked between cabins, each fitted with a full-length mattress, fresh bedding, soft lighting, ventilation and charging ports. You book a four-hour session (from $495 AUD), climb in, draw the curtain and, ideally, get some actual sleep. Two sessions will be available per flight, designed to work with natural sleep cycles rather than against them.
It’s not the airline’s first attempt at rethinking Economy (the Skycouch walked so this could run), but this feels like a more direct answer to the problem. Long-haul is exhausting, this just makes it less so.
The rest of the new cabin rollout follows a similar logic: better design, more space where it counts and small upgrades that make a difference over 15+ hours in the air. Nothing wildly over the top, just a smarter way to get from A to B without arriving completely wrecked.
