1. CABN X
McLaren Vale, South Australia
We all know tiny houses are having a moment, but what if squeezing into a one-room pod isn’t quite your style?
Introducing Cabn X, the larger, more luxurious offshoot of sustainable accommodation company, Cabn. The two lodgings are called Giles and William, and are nestled among the vines of Gemtree Wines, a biodynamic winery in McLaren Vale. Aside from slight variances in materials and colour (William has been fitted with darker timber cuts), both boast a king-size bed, floor-to-ceiling windows, log fireplace and an outdoor sunken bath. Upon arrival you’ll even find an assortment of yummy goodies from local producers. Best of all though, when you book, Cabn will plant a native tree on your behalf. Why? The idea of a tiny house gives you claustrophobia, but you still want to get away from it all.
From AU$595 per night, with a minimum two-night stay.
2. LARNOOK
Kallista, Victoria
The leafy, picturesque Dandenong Ranges provide a glorious backdrop for Larnook, a shipping container-turned-cosy cabin that makes getting off the grid look easy.
Nestled in the rolling hills, this intimate hideaway has a bunch of fancy finishes that elevate it from a simple country hut to something pretty damn special. We’re talking a linen-clad king-size bed, floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors, espresso coffee machine, gas log fireplace and a large deck with an outdoor lounge. This particular level of luxury doesn’t come at a cost to the environment though, as Larnook is powered by solar, batteries and rainwater. There’s plenty to do nearby if you feel like exploring, but we reckon relaxing on the deck while enjoying a local drop and admiring the views is the way to go. Why? All the perks of getting completely off the grid, with a few welcome touches of opulence.
From AU$395 per night, with a two-night minimum stay on Friday and Saturday.
3. NEST AND NATURE
Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia
This is luxury… bush luxury.
Nest and Nature is a brand new stay in the southernmost reaches of Australia, a bit over an hour’s drive from Adelaide. Built into the Inman Valley, the two stunning studios feature floor-to-ceiling glazed windows that make sunsets and sunrises seem like an IMAX movie that you can watch from the luxury of your own bed.
Outside, there’s a bush TV (fireplace) as well as a truly epic concrete bathtub overlooking the valley that may well be one of the best places to relax with a beer in Australia the world.
If this is going bush, count us in.
From AU$599 per night.

4. EPIC SECLUSION
Eyre Peninsula, South Australia
We’ve all had a cabin dream at some point, and we’ve found one in the southern reaches of Australia that wouldn’t look out of place in those dreams.
On the edge of a picturesque gully overlooking the coastal cliffs of the south coast of the Eyre Peninsula in southern Australia, is Maldhi, a brand-new, off-grid cabin of exquisite simplicity. Sun, which there’s plenty of in these parts, powers the place completely.
The cabin makes the most of this desolate, barren, beautiful part of the world by taking up minimal space, letting the location do the work.
There’s surf down below and there’s trails to explore, but when it comes to cabin life, it’s all about getting away and taking it slowly with the special people in your life.
AU$450 per night

5. INTO THE WILD TINY ESCAPES
Out: iPhone, traffic and living expenses. In: Fresh air, gum trees and natural expanses Into the Wild Escapes are a set of tiny homes that seem to be multiplying faster than Catholic rabbits, with almost 50 stays now dotted across Australia’s eastern states.
One of these escapes is Maggie—a beautifully simple, spatially economic structure set in Victoria’s high country beneath some of the brightest stars in the world. The further you make it up the long winding driveway leading to Maggie, the more secluded you feel from the outside world. We highly recommend.
Traditionally, you wouldn’t describe Maggie as luxurious. But then that depends on your definition of luxury—waking up with someone (hopefully) very nice, drinking coffee with a panoramic view of the lush high country? Small home, big luxury vibes.
From AU$197 per night

6. STELLA THE STARGAZER
Victoria, Australia
Stella the Stargazer, the absurdly attractive off-grid tiny home which moves around Victoria’s most epic spots, is back for another year.
It’s bigger and better than last year too—although still not that big, given it is a tiny home. This year it’s got a woodfired, Swedish-style sauna, and two hot tubs built into a deck with unobstructed views of Mount Buller. Soak it up.
It’s also still got last year’s extendable bed which actually extends out of the home itself, so you can lay in bed and look up at the incredible night sky country Victorians are blessed with most nights.
That idea for the unique bed, took it’s inspiration from the designer’s childhood, when his family would move a double bed into the middle of a paddock and sleep under the stars.
Stella the Stargazer is currently at the Delatite Winery in Mansfield and is available from 3 May to 3 August, after which point it will be transferred to a different, eqully epic location in the state, one we’re not allowed to tell you about yet.
From AU$385 per night
