An Island In The Middle Of The Nile

19 Jun 2026

This place is where the Nile meets your bucket list.

Okay so, you’re in the middle of the River Nile, on a private island, with a view so stunning it might actually make you rethink your entire life. But you’re not in Egypt. You’re in Uganda, staying at Wildwaters Lodge, where luxury and nature combine to create an African escape you’ll spend years trying (and failing) to stop talking about.

Accessed only by boat (of course it is), the lodge sits on a lush island surrounded by rushing rapids and some of the most dramatic stretches of the Nile. Hidden among the trees are just 10 elevated suites, each positioned for maximum privacy and maximum gawking at the river below. Floor-to-ceiling openings bring the outside in, while sprawling private decks place you right above the action. There’s even a freestanding granite bathtub because apparently soaking while watching one of the world’s most famous rivers flow past is now a thing.

And the river really is the star of the show. From your deck, you’ll spot kingfishers darting across the water, monitor lizards sunning themselves on the rocks and, if you’re lucky, otters playing in the currents below. The constant soundtrack of rushing water follows you everywhere, making it remarkably difficult to remember what stress feels like.

The pool hovering above the rapids makes a pretty compelling argument.

Of course, if sitting still isn’t your thing, there’s plenty to keep the adrenaline levels healthy. The surrounding area is famous for some of Africa’s best white-water rafting, while kayaking, horseback riding and fishing adventures offer other ways to experience the region. Then again, the infinity pool hovering above the rapids makes a pretty compelling argument for doing absolutely nothing at all.

Book the white-water rafting. Yes, it’s a little terrifying. That’s also exactly why you’ll still be talking about it years later.
