The Hotel You Can’t Drive To

The only way to this unique stay is by cable car.

That’s right, you can’t get there by car, bus, train or on foot; which just goes to show how secluded and exclusive this luxury resort in the Italian Alps really is. Hop on the cable car at the base of Mount Vigiljoch and sit in stunned wonder as it takes you 1,500 metres above sea level straight to the entrance of Vigilius Mountain Resort.

The resort blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings so don’t be surprised if you get off the cable car and have no idea where to check in. We’re just kidding, but you’ll notice that nature takes centre stage here, from the large glass windows in every suite to balconies and outdoor spaces designed to make the most of the mountain setting. Each room is even orientated towards either the morning or afternoon sun, ensuring you can soak up every possible ray of alpine sunshine.

And that’s kind of why you come. Designed by acclaimed architect Matteo Thun, the resort was built to feel like an extension of the mountain itself. Timber, stone and glass dominate the design, while long horizontal lines mirror the contours of the landscape outside. The result is a hotel that feels like it quietly emerged from the hillside.

There’s a wellness area complete with saunas, pools and treatments inspired by the surrounding alpine environment.

Of course, being marooned on a mountain doesn’t mean roughing it. There’s a wellness area complete with saunas, pools and treatments inspired by the surrounding alpine environment. After a day exploring the forests, hiking the mountain trails or snowshoeing through winter landscapes, few things sound better than sinking into warm water while gazing out at the peaks beyond.

The location itself is equally special. Vigiljoch has remained blissfully free of traffic for decades, creating a rare pocket of tranquillity in the heart of South Tyrol. No engine noise. No traffic jams. No frantic rush from one place to the next. Just forests, mountains and fresh alpine air.
